History of Brazil Carnival

Traditionally, carnival in Brazil is held 4 days before Ash Wednesday, thus; carnival in Brazil falls on a different date each year.

Carnival has it’s roots in the pagan festival, Saturnalia, whereby, in Ancient Rome, Masters and slaves would kinda change roles and clothing for a day – in a drunken all day and night party.

From it’s pagan root it grew into a Christian festival , initiated and adopted by the Roman Catholic Church, but it evolved further into a festival of revelry and partying, mainly on account of the imminent 40 days of abstention from bodily, alcohol and food pleasures which commenced on Ash Wednesday. Of course, this is not what the Church Fathers had in mind, because arguably, it had returned to it’s roots.
