The archipelago is deemed to be an ecological sanctuary, the islands are located some 500 kilometers or so off the coast of the capital of Pernambuco; Recife, and is made up of 21 islands and islets. The island group is called home by several animal and plant species, some of them are endangered.
Fernando de Noronha has it's own marine park, the purpose of which is to protect this microcosm, preserving fauna and flora in addition to other natural resources. The marine park also affords visitors unequalled opportunities for ecotourism, and just basically the opportunity to chill out in a fantastic environment.
The Fernando de Noronha archipelago is highly ranked and respected as an international tourist attraction. Arrivals on the island are strictly controlled in order to ensure preservation of the environment.
The highest island point, Morro do Pico,( 323 meters), can be seen from any spot on the islands, access is forbidden, but it can be climbed via steps carved into the rock cliff. The beaches of Boldró, Cachorro, Atalaia and Sancho are four worthy attractions.
The other primary attraction is Baía dos Golfinhos (Dolphin Bay), considered the largest natural aquarium in the world, dolphins mate and raise their siblings in Dolphin Bay.
Other attractions are Leão beach, an ecological point for turtle protection and a rest area for many bird species, besides several ruins of fortresses.
